Cloud procurement can be a challenge for customers of all shapes and sizes, across all industries. Every company has its internal processes, preferences and limitations when it comes to cloud procurement.

Buying cloud through cloud vendors is often a one-size-fits-all approach. This makes sense from a cloud vendor’s perspective, as they need to provide a scalable solution to cloud procurement and can’t change their approach for all use-cases. However, this often means that customers have to fit the strict terms of the cloud vendors. For example, cloud customers are initially expected to fit with 30-day payment terms, pay in US Dollars and use a credit card. But what happens to the many customers that require different payment, procurement and legal terms?

One of Strategic Blue’s key services is our Financial Adaptor suite of services that is designed for customers that require the ability to be flexible in the way they procure cloud services. Strategic Blue buys from the cloud vendor on strict terms and sells to our customers on their preferred terms.

How to buy cloud on your terms

Strategic Blue’s Financial Adaptor service overcomes cloud procurement barriers that a customer has, enabling them to adopt public cloud and increase their cloud adoption. Whether you need different payment terms, require the ability to pay in different currencies, or want to pay upfront for credits and draw down on them over time, Strategic Blue’s service is designed to provide you with additional flexibility when buying cloud.

Looking after Strategic Blue’s customers, I’ve seen a number of different use cases for the Financial Adaptor service. One of the more interesting examples has been enabling customers to change their payment terms month-on-month, depending on their needs. It was contractually agreed that a customer could pay in 45, 60 or 90-day payment terms to Strategic Blue, whilst we paid AWS on standard 30-day payment terms. This type of contractual arrangement was hugely helpful and able to improve the customer’s cash flow during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Strategic Blue works heavily in the education sector, with individual researchers as well as Universities including the University of York and University of California, San Diego. One of the most popular requests from customers in the education sector is the ability to pay upfront for Strategic Blue credits, which can then be drawn down over time. This is particularly of use to customers who have a use-it-or-lose-it budget, and need to spend a certain amount of money in advance. The Strategic Blue customer operations team then tracks the credits and funds left and updates the customer accordingly to prevent any overspend risk.

Strategic Blue can also provide cloud procurement flexibility across all the major cloud vendors, enabling customers to have a consistent procurement and unified billing approach across a multi-cloud setup.
